Roberto Ferruzzi artist of Madonnina

Ferruzzi's first exhibition of the painting was in Venice Italy, in 1897. Roberto Ferruzzi's beautiful painting of the "Madonnina" was given to me by my daughter Maria. Her boss brought it back with him from a recent trip to Italy. It is very beautiful, and she asked me to do some research about the painting.

Apparently, the painting has been referred to with several names. Another title used has been "Madonna of the Streets." However, there was some resentment from the town's people that the title was not appropriate, because of the connection of Madonna and streets. The name "Madonnina" refers to "little mother." because she is holding a child. The child she is holding was her baby brother.

Sister Angela Marie Bovo a Catholic nun from the Order of St. Joseph of Carondelet, discovered the "Madonnina" in the picture was her mother, and began her search about the picture.

The St. Anthony Messenger magazine published a story relative to history of the picture. January 2000 issue.

this has to be the most beautiful picture to me. The first time I saw it was on a prayer card for Pope John Paul. I carried that card for months until I lost it. I would love to have a copy of the picture to hang in my home and my little girl's room. Do you know where one can be purchased?

I have the original painting of Madonna of the Streets. The title is La Damina-little dame. Roberto Tassi of Italy has said this is the original. It was found in a home of a collector who died behind a bookcase.
Anyone who can help this come to light please email me.

I think I have the original Madonnina (madonna of the Streets) oil painting, it was brought to America by the diplomacy. We got it as a gift from a collector a long time ago. If it is not the original, it is a beautiful old replica (over 100 years old) made in Italy. I’m selling it, so if interested please e-mail me at oyarzo_family@yahoo.com

Hi,
I also have a 12x16 canvas print of "madonna in the streets" . The canvas looks very different from today's canvas and it's tacked to the frame. On the outter edge of the canvas, there is "Printed in Italy" and also the artists name, Ferruzzier. Does anyone know how many copies were printed in Italy versus the USA? How much is a replica or print worth? Thanks! ddebster4@gmail.com

A friend of mine has a madonnina in sepia that she found hidden behind another framed picture. I had belonged to her grandmother before she got it. When figuring the time frame of the picture, she said it coincides with World War II. Any information about this I can get for her would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the 1897 old sepia print (brownish color) of this painting with more details in it from the Venice Biennale where it was exhibited in 1897. Thomas Brown and I are working on this to authenticate it for its owner and establish provenance. There are many copies and adaptations done over many decades because of the popularity of the image as a Madonna. Catholic cathedrals sell the version you see above, which is probably an old copy. Here she is shown as a mother, when in fact the original portrait shows her as an adolescent of about 14 with her baby brother. It is an image of poverty, of a child begging, not meant by the Artist to be a Madonna with baby Jesus. In the Biennale it was renamed 'Little Madonna", La Madonnina because of the beauty of the image and the girl's face, framed in silk. The girl in this image posed for Ferruzzi twice, once at age 9 and again five years later, with her baby brother. Please send me an image of your old brownish print on paper from 1897 if you have one.
